What is Resourcefulness?

Definitions for being resourceful are "Being full of
initiative and good at problem-solving, especially in
difficult situations" or "Finding practical uses for that
which others would overlook or discard."

Americans tend to be quite resourceful. Just look
around. Cameras are at intersections to encourage
adherence to the laws of the road. Credit card machines are found at drive up windows. Road side billboards do a song and a dance... Well, ok, they may not dance, but someone on the billboard might dance to advertise a local ballet. There are many things around us that are the results from a seen need for improvement. Ideas were imagined and created in the minds of some resourceful people who had a vision for the resolution and diligence to see it through.

Just look at what being resourceful may involve in regards to character: Alertness, Boldness, Creativity,
Decisiveness, Determination, Diligence, Endurance,
Enthusiasm, Initiative, Persuasiveness, Responsibility,
and Thoroughness. (Just to name a few.)

Wow, being resourceful is being many things... but one thing it is not, is wasteful. Not being wasteful is something we all can participate in even if we are not
inventors or problem solvers.

All it takes is one trip or vacation to a remote area or to a 3rd world country to learn about not being wasteful. Water gets collected from the roof or from a spring to be used for bathing. Milk crates that are found in the trash are used for bicycle baskets. Electricity is turned on only in the evenings and morning time. All portions of the farm animals or the fish that are caught are used in some shape or form, including fertilizer. These are just a few things one might see. Having seen this kind of resourcefulness brings appreciation for what we do have in America. It also brings awareness of how wasteful we really can be. Take note of how much waste we send out the door to our local landfill. Are there items that can be recycled? Glass, paper, plastic, tire rubber, wood, denim, aluminum, or steel can all be used to make eco-friendly products.

Take a look around... how resourceful are you?
