What is Discernment?

Things are not always what they seem. Learning how to discern the truth of a matter is a process which allows us to look beyond our initial impressions of a person, situation or action. It helps one to understand the situation more clearly and results in more satisfying personal and professional relationships.

In order to become a discerning person, issues must be identified and ways to work through an oft-times frustrating situation found. Questions must be asked to find what the situation really is.  Judgments must be carefully made with attention to details. The truth must be sought at all times.  Be ready to adjust your thinking.  Never assume that a situation is hopeless. Constantly look or ways to understand and make the situation better.

The ability to be discerning is developed through each experience when the experience is wisely used as a tool for learning. Determine how to best change your thoughts and actions so that what you have learned can be applied in the next situation. Find constructive solutions by applying the knowledge you gain. Understanding why someone thinks a certain way gives you the opportunity to contribute positively to that person's life.

The Prattville-Autauga Character Coalition's mission is to strengthen our communities by promoting excellence in character for each citizen.
